schizek
I am creating graphics for inserting into instruction manuals. I need to be able to show the ACTUAL screws WITH threads when showing an isometic view. Any suggestions? Is there a free library of fasteners somewhere that would have 3D models that I could use for this purpose?
mpawlak
McMaster-Carr has 3D models of many fasteners. For example: http://www.mcmaster.com/asp/cad/cad.asp?pn=91251A194&view=3D You may have to install the Spinfire applet for your browser. Chris Lohman
In general if you want to actually have threads, you'll have to model them using a helix with a custom profile.
dsulli
Is there a reason why you do not want to enable shaded rendering? I've done this before exporting as a PDF file and I doubt any end-user would compain that the screw threads do not look helical.
schizek
I would not want to use rendered hardware because we need to have line art to show the rest of the graphic clearly. I don't need to show helical threads, just some lines to respresent thread. For right now i am exporting graphics and using another CAD package to create my graphics for two reasons. 1) add threads for hardware 2) To have the ability to DELETE lines that i do not want to show in the grphic ( i.e. smooth edges that don't ALL need to be shown and when they are, makes the graphic a little unclear. Alex Khenkin
How about representing a thread by drawing a few parallel lines in the "Edit View" mode? With features like offset and/or right-click move/copy I find it easier than it sounds. Alex.
schizek
That would work, but would be very time consuming. I am showing the assembly of units that use up to 75 bolt or screws. That is a lot of view editing.
Mike Allen
Try this: take a screw and create a 2D circle, slightly bigger than the diameter of the screw (I used .27 for a .25 screw.) Link the circle for the number of threads per inch. You could then assemble & drop it into a catalog. screw.ics
cborer
Thanks Mike Big work around! An enhancement of the screw catalocs at this theme is a wish of me too. Better display of screws at comand, in the drawings but also in scene.
