TBoom
does anyone know how to create a parameter that is driven by an unlocked distance between two parts/assemblies?
Cary OConnor
You would need to put a temporary shape between the parts that is adjusts when the distance changes. Then use that parts value to drive the other parameter. For example a block that is associated on each end to the two different parts. Then create a parameter to extract that block length. Then use that in the other parameters value. You could then suppress that block as well as it is for reference (make sure the option in Tools/Options/Assembly "Exclude Suppress Part/Assembly in Constraint Solving" is unchecked. TBoom
i thought as much. would be nice to be able to use a smart dimension as a parameter without having to lock it. thanks!
Malcolm Crowe
Hi, You can achieve this using a 2D Sketch (Layout Sketch), where you "Project Constrain" the outlines (or reference points) of the Parts and then apply unlocked dimensions to this projected geometry. These unlocked dimensions then become Driven Parameters than can be accessed by other Parameters within the Scene. In the attached video I've create a simple "Innovative Part" layout sketch. But this also works for "Structured Part" layout sketches, where you can have sketches on different planes within the same Structured Part. TBoom
This is excellent Malcolm. this way i'm able to drive my attachmentpoints on assembly level using the parameters on the part level!
TBoom
just one small issue, the parameter doesn't automatically update. i have to click on the sketch to get the actual dimensions.
