3D Curves - Belt Length Calculations (or similar path lengths)

The following attached video and scene file was created to assist another user, who wanted to calculate the belt length around pulleys in a couple of scenarios. The belt length is extracted from the properties of a 3D Curve. The 3D Curve is extracted from a 2D Sketch using the Extract 3D Curve tool (note that it is important to select the 2D Sketch first, before selecting this tool).

This example is using "Innovative Part Modelling". The following post will use "Structured Part Modelling".

This example is using "Structured Part Modelling", where the extracted 3D Curve remains associated with the 2D Sketch from which it was extracted (as they are both contained within the same Structured Part).

In this example I've also added some additional versatility by adding another 2D Sketch for defining the location of the Pulley centers. This first 2D Sketch also includes some additional line elements to allow modifying the sketch via Pull Handles (demonstrated in the video). The second 2D Sketch (pulleys and belt path) follow the centers of the first 2D Sketch. The 3D Curve then follows the second 2D Sketch.

These types of tools can be created and stored in catalogs for drag and drop as required.

  • Malcolm Crowe changed the title to 3D Curves - Belt Length Calculations (or similar path lengths)
