  1. I have a situation where 1. In scene MyParts.ics, I created 3 internal parts (say PartA, PartB, PartC) 2. I saved PartC as external, (thus creating PartC.ics) 3. I Edited PartC.ics in a s separate window adding a new variant of PartC, so that now PartC.ics contains two internal parts "PartC" and "PartC_proposed" 4. Saved PartC.ics and closed 5. Went back to MyParts.ics Intuitively, I thought that "save external" created a standalone scene for the selected part, then created a link to that scene (PartC.ics), and that therefore any mods to the new scene would be noticed by the MyParts.ics (addition of new internal parts, for instance). That is, I expected that MyParts.ics would now contain a "PartC" node with two sub-parts within it: "PartC" and "PartC_proposed". This is indeed how a scene is treated when it is "inserted" into another scene -- all internal sub-parts are "known" by the host-scene into which a sub-scene is inserted. However, MyParts.ics ignores PartC_proposed.ics and only "knows about" the first variant. It appears that saving-external somehow *only* knows about the first part that is saved-external, and any new parts added to the new external scene are ignored? My question is then: Is there a way to make MyParts.ics "notice" and display both "PartC" and subsequently-added parts (like "PartC_proposed") as sub-parts within the node "PartC" after first making PartC external? (One workaround I've used is to "insert" the new scene into my host scene again, but this requires repositioning the part -- bit of a hassle) Sheesh that was harder for me to communicate than I thought it would be, and I think I did a pretty good job of mangling it... Thoughts welcome. --Will
  2. Thanks Cary. In the meantime, I'll bear all this in mind. Much appreciated. --Will
  3. Cary -- thanks. For some reason, even the surface-smoothness of the assembly above the individual parts was disallowing edit. I guess I'll have to experiment here. BUT I discovered the cause of my slow-save and "faceting..." -- This may be a bug. Here's the deal: 1. Two days ago, I created section-tool through my scene. Normal behavior 2. Yesterday I changed it to "precise mode" to make some measurements. I left the section tool in precise mode and suppressed it. 3. Today it dawned on me that I had made the new section tool. 4. Today, on a lark, I deleted the section tool ... it took a long time to delete -- appears to have regenerated before being deleted. But then save time of my scene went back to normal. 5. I undid my delete of the section tool (ctrl z) ... It took a long time to undelete -- appears to have regenerated. And then when I saved again, the save time went back to slow. 6. I turned off precise mode of the section tool ...It took a long time to come out of precise mode -- appears to have regenerated. But then save time went back to normal So it appears that 1. A precise-mode section tool regenerates, when being deleted, undeleted, or changed out of precise-mode, even if suppressed. 2. A precise-mode section tool regenerates upon each save, even if suppressed. It seems buggy -- shouldn't precise-sections be computed only when needed? That is, A) when being changed *into* precise mode, or B...) being unsuppressed? (NOT when being deleted, or changed out of precise mode, or saved while suppressed). PS. How to turn off blasted emoji's in this forum? Took many attempts to prevent Capital-B-followed-by-a-parentheses-and-a-space from turning into this . Just when I thought I had it, the emoji would reappear as I continued to type the sentence. Hence the B...) above. Sheesh. --Will
  4. Update: I tried to adjust "surface smoothness" for the imports, or sub-parts within: The "surface smoothness" field is there, but it is un-editable for me (can't change the value from default 30). Is there a setting that unlocks/locks this down?
  5. Thanks Malcom! Thanks Cary! I will give these a try.
  6. I am running 2019, the latest service pack. (Unfortunately, our company funds do not allow upgrade to 2020 presently). It might be my imagination, but it seems like this wasn't an issue previously, which was the reason for my question -- I thought perhaps I had inadvertantly tweaked a setting incorrectly... Is "Import reference" available on 2019? I don't see it when importing .stp files (I might be missing). --Will
  7. I have a scene with some complex imported .stp parts in it (needed for clearance and fit and display for customer). Saving takes a long time. I've suppressed the stp files, thinking that this would prevent processing of the stp files and thus speed the saving process. It doesn't appear to help. I haven't rigorously timed, but I estimate 5 minutes plus to save (with lots of text flashing across the bottom left indicating "Part regeneration. Faceting."). Perhaps I'm mistaken that suppression prevents processing during save? Any advice toward speeding the save-process would be welcome. --Will
  8. Spencer, likewise, keep me posted if you find something. This has been an ongoing issue for me as well, and *just* sporadic enough that I assumed it was because of some peculiarity of my setup. Cary, Here's a zip of some of the files in that folder. I had to remove some other files from this morning that were too large, so hopefully the useful info isn't in those instead. ic logs.zip
  9. I'm running 2019 (w/ the latest updates). I've noticed that when I create a part and run modal analysis for the first time (I recall this occurring in other analyses as well -- don't have time @ the moment to experiment and recreate), IC crashes fairly consistently. Workflow is something like this: 1. Create a part in IC 2. Add FEA 3. Add materials, add constraints 4. Generate mesh 5. Autosolve Steps 1-5 seem to work fine. Then the contour plot is displayed, screen freezes, and in a few seconds, I get a crash. I'm then given the choice to either "close down IC," or "check for more info [or some similar phrase] and then close IC" Is this a known problem? Obviously frustrating. I've done this with a few different parts now, and it seems frequent, if not strictly reproducible each time. When preparing to run FEA, I've just gotten used to expecting IC to crash, then having to re-load IC, re-load my model, and re-run... For what it's worth, here is a pic of the simple model. Block on top is a chunk of aluminum for inertia, bracket material is PC/ABS. Glue assumed between bodies. Circular boss is fixed, and modal is run. --Will
  10. So I've figured out a "workaround," and it is suggestive of a weird bug, but it will take the IC team to decipher, I think. I'll document for any who encounter something similar, in case it helps, and for the IC team. Here's the info: 1. I clicked on the camera icon drop-down (bottom right, eyeball with page in front if it) and did "save camera" (called it "temp")... didn't help. 2. Here was my workaround: I clicked on the camera icon drop-down again, and selected a previously saved camera ("view1") instead... my scene is visible again! (good thing I had a previously saved camera!) 3. Here's where it gets buggy: If I then select the "temp" camera, then a different camera, then "temp" again... my scene reorients differently each time I choose the "temp" camera, and the display freezes (won't spin) So somehow, it appears that my default "camera" got corrupted during regular manipulation of my model, and it exhibits unstable behavior. --Will
  11. Other things I've now done: 1. Made a copy of the scene, Deleted all of the bodies in the scene, I've dragged some new blocks onto the scene ... blank display (they are listed in the browser though) 2. Edit Cross-section of one of those blocks ... blank display 3. "Render Now" after dragging on the blocks... blank render 4. I've created a brand new scene and dragged on some blocks... they are visible So it appears the blank-display is associated with just my main scene... is there some setting I've inadvertantly tripped? --Will
  12. For what it's worth, I've also tried Tools > Operations > Recreate Display Tools > Operations > Regenerate I'd be bummed and embarrassed if there's an obvious fix and I've done something silly, but not so bummed as if there's something corrupt in my assembly...
  13. Not sure where to start with this one, but I have a scene with various parts within it (some internal some external, not very large, probably 100-200 parts, many of which are fasteners, etc.) This afternoon I started having troubles with the display keeping up, which I've come to expect when spinning the entire assembly. Then I began having troubles seeing the assembly at all. The display froze and gave me the windows blue-donut... 1. I closed all scenes and reloaded my main scene -- it loads fine, but then nothing displayed (I have parts unsuppressed, and unhidden). When I double-middle-click to center up the display, I get the windows blue donut... 2. I closed and reopened IronCAD and reloaded my scene. Same 3. I rebooted my machine (HP 8560W, Win7 Pro), Reopened IC, Reloaded my scene. Same. I am able to "Open part/assembly" for my external parts Any ideas? Not yet breaking into a cold sweat, but a bit nervous here... Thanks, --Will
  14. I didn't use transferred dimensions here at all. All were created on the drawing itself.
  15. I have a drawing where for some reason, the dimensions that I've created are not 'fully' where they belong. When I go to pick a dimension, another 'copy' of the dimension appears beside the initial position. I've tried closing the drawing, then reopening. Same issue. Ideas? Attached, two pictures.
  16. Thanks Kevin. I have SP1 installed, and I've now copied the DLL's. Hopefully all good. And yes, upgrade to 2020 would/will be nice. Hopefully will be in a position to do so.
  17. I created a new scene, dragged a block onto the scene and an hcylinder onto the block, created a drawing of the scene. Not sure what this means, but when I save, this dialogue pops up... (it's been popping up recently with other parts as well) should I be concerned?
  18. Yet another question that might be obvious -- I've placed a "decal" on a surface of a part, and would like to make a drawing of that part to specify the decal location. Is there a way to turn on decals in a drawing view? (can't seem to find it) --Will
  19. Thanks Cary -- Good news is that when I closed and re-ran Ironcad, the isolated part behaved correctly as it did for you -- and this was without even running as admin. Less-conclusive news is that I (unfortunately, in retrospect) deleted the original part in the original scene. So I have no data on whether a restart would have resolved the issue there. What data I do have, (from trying Kevin's suggestion of resetting sizebox and adjusting the sizebox settings in intellishape properties) suggests that the original scene was somehow more stubborn than when I worked with the part in isolation. I'll watch and apprise if similar occurs in the future. Thanks much. --Will
  20. (correction to my #1 -- I realize that you didn't modify the anchor -- you adjusted the sizebox properties and selected 'start' and 'end' instead of 'anchor". This was my what I did in #2 above, to no avail).
  21. Thanks Kevin -- 1. I see you reset sizebox and then modified the anchor. I tried things step-wise -- first I the 'reset sizebox' command. Resetting twice, and then adjusting the height to a small value (less than 8mm) seems to have made things start working again. (never even had to adjust the Intellishape Anchor properties). Odd. 2. However, in my original scene with the original part, resetting sizebox didn't work. Nor did modifying the Sizebox properties (start, finish, like you did). And I still can't Alt-click the body to select the intellishape. Do you suppose I did anything incorrectly to precipitate this behavior? I surmise that this is a bug? For now, start the model over from the ground up. --Will
  22. My guess is that there is something I've done inadvertently. Attached is a block feature that served as the base feature for a fairly simple innovative part. (It was the very first feature). I went back and increased the depth of the block by .5mm, and I noticed that IC updated the dimension, but the part itself didn't change. After a lot of iteration trying understand what was going on, I I eventually deleted all of the subsequent features, created a new scene with just the block and the behavior persists. This is attached. At least in my system, I can edit the depth of the box, and it captures the new value for the depth, but doesn't update the actual solid. Odd. I've tried regenerating. Not sure what's up. Apologies if this is an obvious thing. I'm stymied. Help?baffle191023a.ics For what it's worth, oddly, I also can't seem to alt-select the shape quickly select the intellishape for edit. I have to click on the 'block' in the tree. And when I do, the attached pic illustrates what I'm finding -- the sizebox is modified, but not the shape... Maybe a reboot of IC is in order now that I think of it. Any advice is welcome, and again, sorry if I'm doing/missing something silly.
  23. I have a customer who wishes to place a logo onto a surface of of a product I'm designing for them, and render it. My plan was to wrap the logo onto the surface, split the surface at the wrapped curve, change colors, and render. So a couple questions come from this 1. Is there a recommended file format (from the graphics world) that works well for such purposes? Any recommendations on workflow to get a logo converted to a wrappable ironcad curve? 2. I can "project" my curves onto my surfaces since curvature of the surfaces is not *too* tight. However, since the anticipated process is a screen-print or a vinyl label, a 'wrap' would be most realistic. I've been able to wrap onto a cylindrical surface (even non-circular cylindrical surface -- lofted surface with curvature in only one direction). Are there plans to allow wrapping onto compound-curvature as well? --Will
  24. Thanks guys. I am unable to see Kevin's comment, or any indication whatsoever -- the post just vaporized. Kevin -- can you tweak the board settings so that the posting user is somehow made aware of enhancement/bug elevations? Some sort of heads-up would be helpful. In case it is relevant: I realize that full board privileges are avail. to active subscribers -- something which I long for, but I am not able to purchase due to funding / budget limitations at my employer. Previously, I seem to remember that some sort of post was left in the originating location to let users know what happened. I was wondering if I needed to re-post, etc. (and with all that's going on, it's way easy to confuse what I've "thought about" posting with what I've *actually* posted) Thanks for the consideration. --Will
  25. Today I posted today about trying to manually set a revision level in a revision table (number, letter, alphanumeric). I submitted the post, left my post up on the screen, and went back to work. Tonight I returned to my computer, clicked 'refresh' on the browser to see there were any responses. The post disappeared, and I received a dialogue indicating that I don't have permission to read my post... I see no trace of my post in the listing of posts either... Ideas? --Will
