Cataloging Parametric Design Variations/assembly F

You can create and store “Assemblies” of Parts which have Design Variations assigned to them along with parametric “linking” to Assembly features to catalogs.

Attached is an example of what I have done. We create a standard PEM nut with the appropriate parameters and create 3 design variations for a 3/8”, ½” and 5/8” size PEM nut. (NOTE: this was created for testing purposes only; do not use this file for manufacturing since the actual PEM dimensional specifications were not used.). Then we created a parametrically linked empty Assembly Feature to the DV part that will create the hole for the PEM plus clearance.

The trick to saving and using this “group” in your designs is the following:

1. After Creating the DV part and dragging in an Empty Assembly Feature you must create an assembly of these two elements.

2. Then at the Assembly level create the parametric link between the DV part and AF.

3. Then simply drag to a catalog and save the catalog.

Open a new file and to use your new DV/AF Parametric Group simply drag into scene as you would normally. The “activate” the parametric functionality you must Disassemble the assembly.

That’s it; all you have to do to use the AF is edit its feature scope to determine which part in the scene you wish the AF to modify.

Hope this provides a glimpse into the DV/AF connection.
