CNC Tool path generation - What's the lowdown?

I use GibbsCAM and it is great, but not particularly inexpensive. It is the same price or more than MasterCAM. When I bought mine a couple of years ago I tried most of the CAM packages on the market and Gibbs was the most like IronCAD in that it is very graphical and freeform. You can make changes to anything anytime, and it has excellent simulation of the cutting process which makes it a great learning tool. It is parasolid based so file transfer is no problem.

Other programs may have caught up to it by now, I quit paying attention once I laid down my hard earned money.

You can email me directly if you have any questions.

Can anybody give some helpful insight about CNC tool path generation software? I'm interested in a good low-to-medium cost package that can generate 3-axis tool paths. 2-axis lathe tool paths would be nice too.

We have been trying out a few different CAM programs to run our CNC Routers. We used Surfcam 3D to make a mould for vacuum forming. There is a free 2D version of Surfcam if you visit their web site.

What sort of work do you do? Different horses for courses, there are a lot of CAM engines out there.
