Try to point at least one side of Smart Dimension to surface instead of the point to point/edge.
Surface->Surface or Surface->Point/Edge will keep "perpendicular" orientation of Smart Dimension, but if you using more locked Smart Dimensions try to use as much as you can Surface->Surface

Hi Brent.
Here is quick workaround for your problem. I do not have time to elaborate more ..
Idea is to make separate 3D curve to drive your linked/copied instances...
Your "middle" problem is that your curve is cutout by cylinder... There is no need to place "master" shape to start position for "link/copy along currve" with triball.
Pattern feature with Edge Pattern+Offset start (IC2016) will do job also.

I`m not using IC for rendering so usually I do not have a need for camera matching..
But you can make fast "proxy" models to make environment...
Here is video how I make model from image proxy.. Maybe You get some new ideas..

Hi, try create pattern on a root (part) level then select the pattern, make an assembly and just copy/link.
