1. Here is one way that may help:

When you open up a scene and a linked texture is missing, then you are asked if you want to browse to a folder where it may be.

After that is done IC ask you if you  want to add that path for finding images in the future.

    I have a folder named C:\Ironcad bas\textures\often used textures\

where I like to put all my custom textures. Then I point IC to that path.

That's a helpful workaround, Robert, thanks.

I am asking for a more comprehensive solution, more automated one, in order not to have to do workarounds like that. The fewer hurdles we encounter the more productive we can be.

  2. The Drawing Styles topic in the Learning Center does not play out its full length. I've tried it in Chrome under both Lion and Windows and the same thing happened both times.

It runs for about a minute and then stops with a large part of it still left to run.

I'd really like to watch all of it since it is such an important topic. Thanks.

  3. Do you mean the Styles/Layers? If so, you can set these per template under the Styles and Layers Dialog.

Yes, I do. Great - that answers it, Cary.

Following your reply I found a Style/Layers topic in http://www.ironcad.com/learningcenter/

    - and, BTW, thanks for the Learning Center - I think it's great and very helpful.

A follow up question: can a Style be applied to an existing drawing to globally modify its existing dimensions' formatting, etc. ?

  4. Hello Friends

Wishing you all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

For the new year, I am planning to get a laptop with 17" screen minimum

Do you have any recommendations to run Ironcad, Autocad, CorelDraw.

    Any help will be appreciated

    Thx

I have a MacBook Pro and I am very happy with it. I have just switched to Apple desktop and laptops after 15 years of Windows pain and my eyes were opened to all that I had been missing. I am now running IronCAD on my desktop MacPro with Bootcamp and it runs better and faster than on any Windows desktop I ever had. I intend to install it on my MacBook Pro soon and I expect it's going to be fine as well. And another important bonus: Apple displays are in a class of their own. I have just sold my one year old highly specced 17 inch Vaio laptop - even though it's one of the best Windows laptops, its display looks dim and hazy next to Apple's.

  5. Mark,

Its my opinion (not necessariy fact) that since IC switched to the HOOPS graphic framework that there is alot of issues that still need to be addressed, since I fear that most issues I have are graphic related. that in conjunction with NVidia cards having some of their own issues makes it difficult for IC to get a handle on these "graphics" issues since they are relying on 2 external developeres to align their moons or at least get their bugs worked out.

My 2 cents worth. oh wait inflation... My half cent worth ;-)

    Tom,

It may well be so. Not wanting to be callous, I think that's their problem.

And to their credit they are not using excuses. If they did, it would be a bit like saying "my dog ate my homework". It does not work in graduate school : )

  6. dropping a color from catalog works for me.

also selecting background from right click menu works to change the background color.

    could it be version related?

    I am using 64Bit Version Build Number 10589 Version 14.0 (date 2011-09-13

    Dallas

    33259

I think it could. I think I'm using the latest version, with the latest hot fix etc. I know that in previous releases these things worked OK, as you describe.

  7. Mark,

From IC 2012 the shortcut keys are saved in separate XML files placed under (Win7): C:\Users\login-name\AppData\Local\IronCAD\IRONCAD\14.0\en-us\Customization\

Maybe those are ther reason behind the problems.

Earlier I sent an ER regarding a new button "Go to Conflict" that should be added under the Customization. I really hope we'll see it soon!

    33257

    Jonas,

Good to know and I agree a button like that would help a lot (and it would be good to have a "Go back" button from the conflict's location as well).

I think it would be nice if all customizations could be made in some sort of a large lookup table that users could edit.

  8. Mark,

Please send your .xml files to support@ironcad.com so I can test with them here.  We are working on a bug that has been reported where the user was unable type text in the Scene Browser for characters that are assigned to keyboard shortcuts, could that be the case for you?

    IronCAD 2012 XML file locations:

    Windows XP:

    C:\Documents and Settings\login-name\Application Data\IronCAD\IRONCAD\14.0\en-us\Customization\

    Windows Vista/7:

    C:\Users\login-name\AppData\Roaming\IronCAD\IRONCAD\14.0\en-us\Customization\

    33250

    Kevin,

This is exactly what is happening in my case - shortcut characters seem to be unavailable when typing text in the Scene Browser.

I am sending in my XML files as you requested.

One more thing since we are on the subject: I use a lot of shortcuts and like to assign my own characters. When a character is already assigned to something else in IronCAD, a message appears saying "already assigned to such and such". And there is no way to override that assignation there and then but I have to laboriously search for that item (I often do not know which menu it can be found in), remove that assignation and then go back to my original place and assign the character. That's why I really do not like redoing my customizations. Perhaps typing in a character could automatically remove its existing assignation? That would be a big help. Failing that, it would be helpful if the message said in which menu the assigned functionality could be found.

    Doesn't work for me either.

    Tom,

This makes me wonder if the software is buggy or if there are some weird interactions going on.

I had set my Triball shortcut to "caps lock" key instead of F10 - that's much handier because of the key's location, but I wonder if that confused the software in some way because of the ambiguity of the key's function under these circumstances.

Bottom line, the software is now significantly dysfunctional for me.

As to the background dialog box, it seems to me that the previously available single solid color option has been eliminated.

I'd like to ask IronCAD to put it back in - it may be unimportant to some but to me little things like that add up when it comes to productivity.

Jonas' suggestion was great - or it would be if it worked for you and me. In previous IC versions I know it did work because sometimes I'd accidentally change the background when aiming to apply a texture or color to a part and missing.

And the inability to enter numbers when editing 2D sketches has just grown a lot. In the recent IC versions I was often unable to enter the numeral 1 - so I'd enter 3-2 instead. Now there are a lot of things I cannot enter in the dimension and label boxes.

Perhaps it does have something to do with corrupt customization files?

I'd hate to have to manually redo all of my customizations - especially if there's no certainty this would solve the problem. I do have those files backed up but if they are messed up, what good is that?

  10. I'm just dropping a color from the Color Catalog onto the background and it changes to that color. This would fail if you currently have the background set to a 3D Environment.

    33249

    Kevin,

That's what I've tried about a dozen of times and it did not work. My bkgrnd is set to color.

I wonder of something has gone bad with my IronCAD and I have to reinstall it.

I'm not looking forward to that...

  11. Recently I have been unable to type in / edit names of parts and assemblies in the scene explorer. Only two or three keyboard letters can be typed in. Some keyboard numbers can be typed in but number 1 cannot.

The number 1 cannot be entered into the length box when editing a line in 2D profile editing mode or into the direct entry box for moving a triball.

My keyboard works fine with other programs.

    What is causing these problems?

  12. I bought a 2.4 Ghz 12 core MacPro and was disappointed and after three weeks I exchanged it for a 3.33 GHz, 6 core, 16GB of RAM (Apple will exchange your computer if you are not happy with it).

Now this one is really fast - my new MacPro is the fastest running Windows computer I've ever had. I use Bootcamp to run Windows 7 Pro 64.

  13. I downloaded the IC 2012 trial and it took about 4 hours. Then to find out the file was corrupted and wouldn't install is frustating so it was nice to have the disk show up. Kevin suggested however using this download manager. See the note at the bottom of this page (link).

I know that kind of thing can be frustrating - I've been there, more than once : )

However, I had good luck with it just now - IronCAD 2012 and the Hotfix downloaded and installed without a hitch on my MacPro with Bootcamp and Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The software runs and renders really fast.

  14. Hi,

I have accidentally discarded the new IronCAD DVD I got in the mail recently but have kept the serial number and codeword sheet.

I'd like to download the latest version instead of getting another DVD sent - which I am not particularly keen on anyway because it is not ecological when we have an option to download.

    My questions is:

Since I have only found a trial version under Downloads on the website, is that the very latest version of IronCAD?

If not, is there a way for a legitimate user to download the full latest version?

BTW - if that's possible, I'd like to permanently opt out of getting physical DVDs and mailings - why waste paper and plastic, etc.? And it would save IronCAD money, too. A win-win! : )

    Thanks.

  15. Hi,

Recently I have saved my customization XML files.

Along with those, I saved a "Mark's IronCAD Options" - UCX file.

I have forgotten how I saved the UCX file and where it should go once I have installed IronCAD on a new computer.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

  16. Hi,

I am about to install Windows 7 Professional and I have both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions available.

I remember reading a comment online that suggested that IronCAD ran better on Windows 7 32-bit version than on the 64-bit one.

    Is that true?

Is the 32-bit or 64-bit version better for IronCAD?

Also - how about XP 64?

Will XP even be supported by IronCAD 12?

    Thanks.

    Mark
