2D Sketches Catalog - Axes Orientated to View

One of the confusing things when starting a new sketch on some of the standard planes, is that the XY axes of the sketch are orientated differently to the view (front, back, left, right, top, bottom).

 

Attached is a Catalog of 2D Sketches prepared for dropping onto the different standard planes (or parallel part faces). Once dropped on the plane use the TriBall can be activated to position where you want. Alternatively you can set the sketches in the catalog to automatically activate the TriBall when dropped.

 

Also attached is a movie demonstrating the dropping of these 2D sketches from the catalog.

Hi Malcolm. The default scene and datum scene is set on the first angle. Try this trick, on opening a scene, click camera picker to Select T.F.L. and notice the the datum will rotate on the scene. Once rotated the camera view from the picker will show on the correct views. I think what I did before and placed it on the forum in the past is do the steps and save the scene according to its label. I hope this will help rolleyes.gif regards - joseph

Hi Joseph. In my opinion (which isn't necessarily the right one), IRONCAD only gets the orientation of the sketches correct for the Top and Right views. All other views (including Front) are orientated with the sketch axes the wrong way.

 

I don't understand what you were trying to explain, so I have attached a movie demonstrating the problem with sketches relative to the Bottom, Back and Left views. For sketches created this way I often need to first orientate the blank sketch to the desired orientation using the TriBall, so that the axes are consist with the view that I am using.

 

The other attached movie demonstrates a 2D Sketch being dropped onto the YZ plane to create axes orientated to the Left view. The sketches can be dropped directly onto part faces as well; however, the orientation of the part's anchor is important as it influences how the dropped sketches are orientated (see attached image).

 

When building up large assemblies I often need to create 2D Sketches that are orientated to different views, so that I can see relevant features or parts that aren't visible from other views. The sample part in the attached movies is a simple example, as it has a feature that isn't visible from the Top, Front or Right views.

 

I'm happy to learn a simpler way to achieve the desired result if one exists.

Hi Malcolm. I made a scene template and hope I got it right. The camera picker shows the view and placed the xy marker in the same position on the top left hand corner of each plane. I do hope I get it right. regards - joseph

Hi Malcolm. Thanks for the video and finally struck cord to understand on my end. There was a discussion way back on thread here forum about the scene world coordinate axes, coordinate system and on the 2D coordinate axes as disjointed. The Z axis is lost child on the 2D world as it goes X for horizontal and Y for vertical planes. Creating a profile on X-Z plane the view is like dropping my head 90 degrees on my left shoulder on the X plane with the construction lines working correctly. But clicking the front camera from the picker puts it upright as intended. However it is counter to the convention of X horizontal and Y vertical displayed now on the coordinate grid axes but applying your 2D plane catalog marker does show the proper orientation. We just now have to reconcile perception on our head as it doesn't on our sights.

 

Thanks Malcolm for pointing it out this on going confusion as I also took it for granted on how I just addressed it personally.
