PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Union Special Corporation, Chicago, Illinois 2/1980 – 3/1985 Machine Development Engineer • Conceptual design of sub-systems and improvements for existing lines of industrial sewing equipment. • Used proprietary design program, CASASP, to design and analyze sewing component geometry for performance, overload, fatigue, and bearing loads. • Analyze design ideas within the company, for mechanical integrity and workability. • McAuto CAD for component part design. Supervised design staff as needed. • Worked with model makers and test engineers to certify new prototype equipment. Hi-Cone Division of Illinois Tool Works, Itasca, IL 4/1985 – 8/2000 Senior Design Engineer • Conceptual design of applicating machines for beverage can and bottle multipacks. • Layout, details, assembly drawings, bills of material, and documentation of the design. • Assist others to produce an Operator and Service Manual for each machine. • Guide machine shop personnel through prototype development, testing and revisions. • Assisting field service personnel with debugging the machines at the customer’s plant. • Worked in department of eight to ten engineers, with projects split up amongst the group. • Gained experienced with custom component design, welded machine frames, castings, machined parts, sheet metal design, specification of off-the-shelf components, power transmission design, lubrication systems, plastic and sheet metal safety shields, etc. • Experienced with manual drafting equipment, Medusa 3D CAD, and AutoCad. • Served as head of a department committee, given the task of choosing a new 3D CAD system to replace AutoCad. As part of this, took coursework and ran 1-month trials of three leading 3D CAD systems. • Additional responsibility as system manager for a DEC Microvax host-based system for approximately 5 years. Sole Proprietorship 11/2000 to Present Part-time stay-at-home-father, and part-time self-employed in a small home repair and remodeling business that I run out of the house. The scope of this work includes all customer contact, job bids, design where required, materials specification and procurement, and labor.
